Scar Therapy

Not all scars heal the way we hope. Scar therapy can help.

Scar therapy is specialist treatment designed to improve how a scar looks, feels and moves and to address what's happening in the deeper layers of tissue beneath it.

After any surgery, the body lays down scar tissue as part of the natural healing process. For many people that process goes smoothly. But for others, scar tissue can become tight, adhered to underlying structures, or cause discomfort that affects everyday movement and function. This can be immediately after surgery but also years later.

Scar therapy works by mobilising that tissue, improving blood and lymphatic flow, releasing adhesions and restoring flexibility so that your scar stops being something you work around.

At Align Pelvic Health Physiotherapy, scar therapy is offered for:

  • C-section scars

  • Hysterectomy scars

  • Abdominal surgery scars

What is scar therapy?

Scar therapy combines specialist hands-on techniques with the LymphaTouch® Pro - a clinically researched medical device that uses precisely controlled negative pressure and high-frequency vibration to lift, mobilise and treat scar tissue, both at the surface and in the deeper layers beneath.

It is completely comfortable. There is no pain and no bruising. The device allows precise control of pressure, making it safe and effective even on sensitive, newly healed, or long-established scars.

Treatment can help with:

  • Tightness, pulling or a dragging sensation at the scar site

  • Numbness, altered sensation or hypersensitivity around the scar

  • A scar that feels stuck down or tethered to deeper tissue

  • Redness, raised or thickened scar tissue

  • The C-section shelf or overhang

  • Internal adhesions contributing to core weakness, pelvic floor symptoms or bladder issues

  • Pain during exercise, movement or everyday activities linked to scar tissue

It is never too late to start. Whether your surgery was six weeks ago or ten years ago, scar tissue continues to respond to treatment.

What is the LymphaTouch® Pro

The LymphaTouch® Pro is an advanced medical-grade therapy device designed to support recovery, reduce swelling and improve soft tissue mobility. Using controlled negative pressure with the option of gentle vibration, it works with your body's natural healing processes to help scar tissue soften, release and become more flexible.

It is safe, non-invasive and suitable for a wide range of scars, including those that are sensitive, recently healed, or that have been present for many years.

New to LymphaTouch® therapy? The easiest way to try it is as part of a Mummy MOT®. If your scar is ready to be worked on during your postnatal assessment, LymphaTouch® may be used as part of that appointment at no extra charge. If your scar needs more dedicated attention, a standalone scar therapy appointment can be arranged from there.

Is scar therapy with LymphaTouch® right for me?

The LymphaTouch Pro is a safe, gentle treatment that's suitable for most people, but as with any specialist therapy, there are some situations where it isn't appropriate. Please read through the list below before booking. If you're unsure about anything, you're very welcome to get in touch and I'll be happy to talk it through with you before your appointment.

We're unable to treat you with the LymphaTouch Pro if you have:

  • Active cancer or are currently undergoing cancer treatment in or near the treatment area

  • Congestive heart disease

  • Severe kidney disease

  • A known or suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

  • An active skin infection, open wound, or broken skin over the treatment area

  • Severe or fragile skin conditions in the treatment area that may be aggravated by negative pressure

  • Recently had surgery at this site - please allow at least 6 weeks and ensure your wound is fully healed. There should be no scabs or open areas at the wound site.

If any of the above apply to you, please don't be put off getting in touch.

Depending on your situation, manual scar therapy techniques may still be an option, and every appointment also includes advice on how to care for your scar at home. I'm happy to chat through what's right for you before you book.

What does a session involve?

Your initial appointment begins with a thorough consultation. I'll ask about your surgical history, your current symptoms, and what matters most to you. A visual and hands-on assessment of the scar follows, looking at tissue mobility, sensation and any deeper restriction.

Treatment combines specialist manual scar massage and LymphaTouch® Pro therapy, tailored to what your scar needs that day. You'll leave with a home care plan so you can continue supporting your healing between sessions.

Most people notice a difference from the first session but often meaningful, lasting change develops over a course of treatment, which is why a series of follow-up sessions is usually recommended.

How It Works

LymphaTouch® Pro uses a combination of negative pressure (vacuum therapy) and mechanical vibration to stimulate the lymphatic system and soft tissues.

This process helps to:

  • Increase lymphatic flow

  • Reduce fluid build-up and swelling

  • Improve circulation

  • Release tight or restricted tissues

The treatment is gentle, controlled, and suitable for a wide range of scars, including those which are sensitive.

  • Not at all. The device uses gentle, controlled negative pressure and most people find it comfortable and relaxing.

If you are having scar treatment you may feel a light pulling sensation as the tissues lift, but this should not be painful. If anything feels uncomfortable at any point, pressure is immediately adjusted.

  • Yes. After a C-section, it’s common for fluid to build up in the abdomen and surrounding areas. LymphaTouch helps encourage lymphatic flow, which can reduce swelling and leave you feeling lighter and less restricted.

  • Yes. Once your scar has healed past the acute healing stage it is ready to be worked on directly, treatment can help improve mobility, reduce tightness, and soften the tissue.

This can also improve comfort and how your body moves.

  • Many women experience numbness or altered sensation after a C-section.

Treatment can help stimulate the area to support improved awareness and connection over time, although this varies from person to person.

  • Everyone is different. Many women notice immediate softening and reduced tightness after a single session.

For lasting change, a course of three to six sessions is usually recommended.

We can chat about this at your initial assessment.

Many women come to scar therapy years, even decades, after their caesarean and can still see significant improvement.

  • We recommend staying hydrated and wearing comfortable clothing.

After your session, gentle movement and drinking water can help support the body’s natural processes.

  • Yes, if LymphaTouch® is appropriate for your scar during your Mummy MOT, I may use it as part of that appointment at no extra charge.
