Why choose Align Pelvic Health
Pelvic health deserves a specialist. Not someone who fits it in between ankle sprains and shoulder rehab, but a physiotherapist whose entire practice is built around it.
Josie Marshall MCSP is a specialist pelvic health physiotherapist who works exclusively in women’s pelvic health. Before setting up Align Pelvic Health, Josie worked as an NHS Scotland Specialist Physiotherapist within a dedicated pelvic health team, prior to that she jointly ran the pelvic health service and alongside the Consultant Gynaecologists and Specialist Urology Nurses, managed complex cases. She brings that same clinical depth to every private appointment.

How it works
Choose your appointment - Not sure which is right for you? If you’ve had a baby recently, or not so recently, and want a thorough postnatal check, the Mummy MOT® is the place to start. For pelvic floor symptoms at any other stage of life, the Women’s Pelvic Health appointment is for you. Both are bookable directly online, with no referral needed.
Your first appointment - It begins with a relaxed, unhurried conversation about your symptoms, your history, and what you want to get back to. A physical assessment follows. If an internal pelvic floor examination is indicated, it is always explained in full beforehand and is entirely your choice - written and verbal consent is taken before anything happens.
Your personalised plan - You’ll leave with a clear treatment plan built around your life and your goals, whether that’s returning to running, managing symptoms day to day, or simply understanding your body better.
Follow-up and progress - Follow-up appointments track how things are going, advance your exercise programme, and give you space to ask questions as they come up.
The Haddington clinic
Appointments are held at The Courtyard, Ugstonrigg, a beautifully converted 1700s stone building set in private grounds on the western edge of Haddington, accessed directly off the A199. The space is calm, private, and genuinely lovely to be in: a far cry from a busy NHS waiting room. There is free parking on site and the clinic is easy to reach from across East Lothian, whether you’re coming from Tranent, Musselburgh, Dunbar, or the villages in between.
Haddington is one of East Lothian’s fastest-growing towns, with more families and women settling here every year, and specialist pelvic health care has not always kept pace with that growth. This clinic is here to change that.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No. You can book directly online without a referral. If your GP has suggested you see a pelvic health physiotherapist, that’s a good sign you’re in the right place but you don’t need their permission to get started.
Will I need an internal examination?
Not necessarily, and never without your full understanding and consent. An external assessment can give some information if you don’t want an internal assessment and your appointment will be shaped around what you’re comfortable with. If an internal pelvic floor assessment is indicated and you would like one, it will be explained clearly beforehand, and both verbal and written consent are always taken first. You are in control throughout.
I had a baby a few years ago - is it too late to get help?
Absolutely not. The Mummy MOT® is just as valuable for women whose babies arrived two or three years ago as it is for those at six weeks postnatal. If something has felt off since you gave birth e.g. leaking, heaviness, discomfort, a core that doesn’t feel like yours anymore - it’s worth getting properly assessed, whatever the timeline.
What kinds of symptoms can pelvic health physiotherapy help with?
A wide range. Leaking when you cough, sneeze, exercise, or laugh. Urgency, that desperate need to rush to the toilet. Pelvic heaviness or the feeling that something is falling out. Pelvic pain, pain with sex, or pain that has no obvious explanation. Constipation or difficulty emptying your bowels. Symptoms related to menopause. If you’re not sure whether what you’re experiencing is something pelvic health physio can help with, get in touch and ask - it’s always better to check.
How many appointments will I need?
That depends entirely on your symptoms, your goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Some women notice significant improvement after one or two sessions; others benefit from a longer programme. At your initial appointment, you’ll be given a clear picture of what’s going on and a realistic sense of what to expect from treatment.
